Strategic Plan
The central intergovernmental water resource issue in the Basin is: how should the water resources of the vast river system be managed and shared among jurisdictions in a fair and equitable manner, while recognizing the legitimate interests and needs of each jurisdiction, and preserving the integrity of the aquatic ecosystem?
The Mackenzie River Basin Board developed the MRBB Five Year Strategic Plan in 2006 to help it deal with this question. The Strategic Plan is intended to guide the work of the MRBB from 2006 to 2011.
The MRBB Strategic Plan sets out the following goals for the Board:
- Ensure human health and safety,
- Ensure healthy, abundant and diverse aquatic species and habitat,
- Improve water quality,
- Ensure sufficient water quantity,
- Ensure that water uses are sustainable,
- Ensure a knowledgeable and involved public.
The MRBB Strategic Plan outlines seven priorities which the Board will focus on:
Understanding the Basin and Protecting the Basin
- Improving knowledge,
- Including traditional ecological knowledge,
- Responding to climate change,
- Understanding contaminants in drinking water and country foods,
- Protecting aquatic ecosystem biodiversity,
- Developing a watershed approach.
